My internship helped me become a leader that others can rely on.

My internship helped me become a leader that others can rely on.

Tyrone Karic, a Film Studies Graduate from the University of Hull completed a 12 week internship at SHE Knows through the Humber Internships Programme (HIP).

SHE Knows is a safety training and consultancy service for the Occupational Health and Safety Industry. Tyrone secured an internship as a Management Trainee, a new brand new role to support the directors in the day to day operations of the business with full exposure to all areas of a busy office.

Here, Tyrone shares his experience.

My internship has built my confidence
The nature of my role is to liaise with SHE Knows customers and provide marketing information, course booking enrolment, and issuing certifications. Throughout the courses at SHE Knows it is my role to make sure the candidate and the tutors are looked after.

I have gained a lot of confidence since starting my internship and I also believe I have become a better communicator which has helped me in maintaining the office in high order.

The support I received was amazing

I never felt I could shy away from any interaction, Rob and the Humber Internships Programme team were always very supportive of me before, during and after the internship.

I had the opportunity to learn from my mistakes
Throughout the early stages of the internship, I organised a course that was not of a high standard and although the course was still a success, I knew I never wanted to be in such a position again. Therefore, before every course now I prepare for the unexpected, so I can be able to deal with it if such an event happens.

A HIP internship could land you a permanent job at the end
I have always had a positive mindset about internships, but it can be disheartening when you start an internship that you know will eventually end with you not keeping the job. However, with HIP some internships are viewed to continue to full-time work after it ends. This means you have the power and if you are working hard, you can decide if you want to continue after the internship ends.

I’m now a permanent employee
I’ve really enjoyed my time at SHE Knows and I’ve accepted a full-time job as a Management Trainee.

My advice is to join HIP!
When I first joined HIP, they were very supportive of my current position, and they were very helpful to me with advice in my pursuit of a job. I would also say to be open to giving other career paths a chance, you could be pleasantly surprised and really enjoy it.
