Overview of Opportunity
- SMS Towage are the largest independent port tug operator in the UK, operating a modern fleet of 20 tugs servicing various strategically placed UK port locations. SMS have vessels standing by to service clients & assist vessels of any size, entering or leaving these and other UK ports.
- SMS provide a harbour towage service for any size of vessel docking into/sailing from port, as well as working on special one-off projects, utilising their specialist in-depth knowledge, industry expertise and skilful crews. SMS also supply to the North Sea offshore oil and gas and renewables sectors, including towage of rigs and barges and provision of sea transport.
- The Commercial Assistant Internship is following on from a recent successful 12-month student placement at SMS Towage, extending support for the small and busy commercial team. Working close with the Commercial Director and Commercial Manager at SMS with key business function support, this internship allows for increased efficiency, time and focus for the senior management team.
Role Description
Commercial:
- Assess and/or make recommendations and enhance internal procedures
- Performing entry level operational tasks for new business submissions and renewals
- Propose offers for new clients and/or updating contracts for existing clients
- Track progress of offers
- Market research
- Cooperating with other teams (Ops, HELM, sales)
Customer Relationship Management software (CRM)
- Understanding the needs of the Commercial team from a system perspective
- Help advise and evaluate potential CRM systems for SMS as they look to implement in the future, to improve the customer relationship
HELM:
- HELM is SMS Towage’s recently implemented software that includes all the technical, operational, and commercial activities performed by the company
- The intern will focus on analysis and improvements for the Commercial side of the software, identifying areas for improvement/implement improvements as directed by management/automation etc
- Evaluating and documenting internal procedures and workflows
- Data analysis and reporting tools
Marketing:
- Website: Adding to the news archive and building entries for the Blog on related SMS towage work across the ports we work, and keeping general information UpToDate
- Social Media: Supporting with SMS accounts on LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube. As well as researching and keeping track of competitors social media
- Events: assisting with any events that may occur during the internship (e.g. naming ceremony, dinners, functions/celebrations etc), including invitation emails and other duties
Skills and Experience (Essential):
- Be business minded
- Be keen to learn and achieve
- Be hard-working and resourceful
- Have strong IT skills in particular MS Excel
- Work well as part of a team and independently
- Have a flexible approach to working
- Be organised and self-motivated
- Have a polite and professional manner
- Have knowledge of data, and how to use data systems
Skills and Experience (Desirable):
- Previous exposure to/knowledge of Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems, or similar
- Full driving licence and access to own transport is advantageous, but not essential
Qualifications:
- Recent graduate or current finalist/student available from any subject area to be considered
- A Business orientated degree advantageous, but not essential

- This internship is project based, with no permanent opportunity currently expected
