My software development skills helped Tick9 deliver more client projects

My name is Adam and I have been working as an Intern for Tick9 through the Humber Internships Programme (HIP).

Tick9 is a data solutions company helping businesses make sense of their data. We provide data integrations, allowing clients access to their data across multiple systems, and data visualisations so clients have the information they need to make efficient decisions.

The internship enhanced my knowledge and really opened my eyes

My employer wanted an intern software developer to take over some of the increasing workload that the business was dealing with. I had hoped to improve my technical skills in terms of writing software and work with the wide range of tools needed to make development efficient. I have been given the opportunity to do this whilst understanding how software development is done in a professional environment.

HIP provided a lot of advice and tips before I started and have continued to support me during my internship

I’ve had regular meetings/discussions with my careers consultant and work through how the internship is going and what my thoughts are about it. Such as what I feel I can improve on and what new skills I can develop while working on projects.

I’ve really enjoyed the work environment

Everyone’s been very welcoming to me during team meetings and catching up on where everyone is on their projects is very insightful. The work environment is also very flexible in where we work. I’ve been able to use my own workspace through remote working, which has been very useful for the productivity I can accomplish during project development, and I can feel relaxed and focused on any tasks that need completing. However, we’ve also had days where the team meets up in person, which has been a great experience and has given me the opportunity to get to know everyone and understand how they work individually.

I’ve had the opportunity to work on multiple software development projects.

Some of these have been working on updates to existing applications, while others were new applications built from the ground up. Working on these apps there have been some challenging problems that I’ve overcome due to improvements in my problem-solving skills. Completing these software projects and releasing them for users to try out has been very fulfilling.

It was great to see my work making a valuable contribution in the real business world

“Developing Adam was a key component to being able to deliver more client projects through the rest of 2022 but we also wanted to give an opportunity to a youthful developer to learn new skills and develop in a business environment. Overall the internship has been a great success and we’re happy to see the progress Adam has made.” Steve Fewster, Owner of Tick9

My internship has led to permanent employment

Now my internship is over my career is starting as a Software Developer with Tick9. My main role is to work on our low-code applications for clients, which are adept at replacing spreadsheets and managing client data. I aim to keep learning and developing my coding skills and look forward to doing this as part of the team at Tick9.

The Humber Internships Programme helped me to make a great start in my career. It could help you too.
