Employer Insight: Intern brings productivity boost for vehicle graphics company

Cale Davidson, a Game and Entertainment graduate from the University of Hull completed a twelve week internship at Matt Vinyl Graphics – designer and manufacturer of vehicle graphics based in Hull.

We caught up with employers Luke and Lauren Nicholson to find out how their intern gave them the additional resource needed to handle new work coming into the business.

We wanted the candidate to come with innovative designs to help move our business forward

We were looking for a candidate with sufficient computer/CAD knowledge so we could potentially increase our design team. We wanted the candidate to have a good rapport when dealing with customers whether this be over the telephone of face to face on a daily basis.

The main skill needed was computer aided design, we wanted the candidate to know how to use or be easily trainable on our software and have a design thought process to be able to come up with innovative designs to help move our business forward.

Internships gave us knowledgeable candidates

We went down the internship route as opposed to the apprenticeship route because we felt this role required someone with knowledge & training on computer software, whether this be generic CAD or our software particularly.

The intern route provided us with candidates which have this knowledge and training so they would adapt well into an already established design team and be confident enough to bring their own ideas.

We previously hired an intern onto a full-time contact, so this gave us a great base and the confidence to go down this route again.

Our intern reduced workload and kept on top of new work coming in

Our intern has been helping out on our design team, working with our customers to come up with designs and follow this through the whole process to ensure the job in hand is finished to a high standard.

We benefitted from our intern because they have reduce workload and kept on top of new work coming in.

An intern is worth investing the time in

Our advice would be to take the step, whether this prove to work out for your company or not, it is definitely worth investing the time in. To employ someone with the training & knowledge you require saves lots of time and also brings a new confidence to the team.

We felt supported all the way

HIP’s service and support has been fantastic from start to finish. Any questions were answered quickly and explained well, every step was broken down, so we felt supported every step of the way.
